How much to keep? Where to keep it? How much is too much?
CREATE A MEMORABILIA SPOT. This could be a shelf, a box, a drawer, a chest or a closet. Pick the size of space based on how much room you can spare in your home or office. You might choose to have both a display area and a storage area. Also, you may need a separate spot or box for each member of the household.
GATHER UP ALL THE MEMORABILIA AND KEEPSAKES. Will they all fit in the space you’ve allocated? If not, you have two choices; allocate more space or get rid of some items.
DISPLAY KEEPSAKES AS PART OF YOUR DÉCOR. Items that are grouped and have enough space around them, are easier to view and enjoy.
WHEN IT’S TIME TO PARE DOWN, ask yourself who the item is for, and what’s the future benefit of that item? If keeping an item for someone else, maybe they can enjoy it now. If it’s an item for yourself, then decide why it’s important to you.
ASK YOURSELF: Would a picture of the item be an alternative? Is keeping just one, of a group of similar items, enough? Do any items have bad feelings or guilt associated with them (was it part of a previous relationship, or was it an expensive purchase)? Can items be rotated for display seasonally, or every 6 months? If someone gave you the item, remember that they wouldn’t want it to cause clutter and stress.
Now that your keepsakes fit your space, you’ll be able to enjoy them and take comfort in knowing that each item is special.
